Spring Term

After a super first term we are READY to begin our Spring learning!

This term, in English, our writing will be based on the Science Fiction novel Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. The class will cover a range of text types including persuasive letter writing, non-chronological reports and instruction texts as well as focusing on building our comprehension skills. We will also develop our performance and role play technique.  We will recap prior knowledge from Autumn term in grammar, punctuation and spelling whilst also learning about active and passive voice, apostrophes for contraction, modal verbs, expanded noun phrases, relative clauses, subject and object and perfect forms of verbs. Our classic narrative poetry study will focus on The Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll.

Our Maths learning will continue to follow the Lancashire scheme of work whilst also incorporating resources from Maths Shed, I See Reasoning, White Rose Maths and NCETM Teaching for Mastery. In Year 6 we have high expectations that all pupils can achieve; we teach a rich, balanced and progressive curriculum using Maths to reason, problem solve and develop fluent conceptual understanding in each area. We will cover a range of areas this term including written and mental calculations, sequences, coordinates, calculating with fractions, measure, shape, ratio and proportion, area and perimeter.

Our Catholic Religious Education programme will focus on Expectation, Sources and Unity as we prepare for the celebration of Easter.

Science will look at Evolution and Inheritance before moving on to the topic of Earth and Space. We have now returned to our normal PSHE session of one per week where we will study diversity and challenging discrimination before moving on to evaluating media sources, sharing things online, influences and attitudes to money and financial risks.

In Music we are lucky enough to have Lancashire Music Service coming in and teaching guitar to all children. In PE we have Accrington Stanley leading sessions on fundamental movements skills. Our computing program will focus on Spreadsheets and in French we will be doing a recap of all of the KS2 French learning objectives.
