Internet Rules for Parents

The Internet is a wonderful thing.  It’s fun, it’s a great way for children to keep in touch with friends and its educational benefits are unlimited.  But like any technology, it can go wrong.  Here are some tips to keep children safe on the internet:

Talk to your child about what they are doing online.

Keep asking them frequently and ensure them that they can come and talk to you about anything they do or see on the internet.

Help your child to understand the possible dangers and how they can keep themselves safe.

Ensure that your child understands not to give out any personal details, irrelevant of how minor they think they are or how well they think they know the person.

Make a ‘Favourites’ folder with your child.  This can contain pre-agreed sites that you allow them to visit.

Ask your Internet Service Provider (ISP) about the safety features that it offers.

Keep your computer in a communal area so that you can always see what sites your child is going on.

Children love to use chat rooms.  Make sure your child is only going on pre-approved chat room sites.  Go on yourself before and encourage your child to introduce you to their chat room friends.

Involve your child in writing a family set of internet rules.  Make clear to them what is and isn’t acceptable.

Go on the internet together if your child wants to do some research for school.
