Art and DT
Welcome to Art & Design Technology
Subject Leader: Mrs. Pamela McGarry
At our school, we believe that every child is an artist and a designer. Mrs. McGarry believes that anyone can succeed and express themselves through creative subjects. We recognize that Art and DT are not just about the final product; they are powerful tools for mindfulness, allowing children to find a sense of calm and focus both inside and outside the classroom.
By exploring the works of diverse artists and designers from around the world, we aim to open minds, embrace different cultures, and inspire our budding creators to record their own unique experiences of the world.
Artist of the Moment
To celebrate excellence, we feature an "Artist of the Moment." This spotlight introduces our children to various styles and techniques, from classical masters to contemporary visionaries. Students create their own interpretations based on these artists, and we take great pride in displaying their work throughout the school. This gives our pupils a sense of purpose and a unique way of perceiving themselves and their environment.
Community & Collaboration
We are passionate about bringing the "real world" of art into our classrooms. We regularly encourage outside artists to visit and share their expertise.
New for this year: We are thrilled to introduce our After-School Art Workshop Club, led by a talented local artist. This provides an extra layer of mentorship and allows children to dive deeper into complex techniques in a fun, collaborative setting.
Our Subject Intent
Our Art and DT curriculum is designed to stimulate imagination and develop essential life skills. Through teamwork and exploration, children learn to trust one another’s ideas and provide respectful, supportive feedback during the evaluation process.
At St Mary's, we aim to:
Enable Expression: Help children record from first-hand experience and imagination.
Develop Skills: Improve control of materials, tools, and techniques through complex, hands-on activities.
Solve Problems: Use DT to encourage critical thinking and practical decision-making.
Foster Appreciation: Build a lifelong knowledge of artists, craftspeople, and designers from different times and cultures.
Promote Wellbeing: Use the tactile and sensory nature of art to develop the "whole child"—socially, emotionally, and intellectually.
