National Year of Reading 2026

The National Year of Reading 2026 is a UK-wide initiative led by the Department for Education and the National Literacy Trust to combat the declining enjoyment of reading. Centred on the theme "Go All In," the campaign aims to reconnect all ages with reading through schools, libraries, and communities, promoting it as a joyful, everyday activity. You can find out more about it here:

At Saint Mary's we have been celebrating the Year of Reading in the following ways:
Reading Sacks:
Each class has a reading sack which contains a book of their choice, a class soft toy, a pad and pen, a bookmark and a hot chocolate sachet. Pupils take turns to take home the sack and read together then they write in the pad what they enjoyed about their book.
Reading Robin:
During April, we held a Reading Robin. On one chosen week, each class stopped what they were doing and at 11am a different teacher would come and read to them! It was great for pupils to listen to different adults read and share a new story together.
Reading on the Move Competition- June 2026
Pupils were invited to take part in our Reading on the Move competition! Pupils had to send in a photograph of themselves reading in an unusual spot! We had some brilliant entries and it was tough to choose the winners! The winners received a £5 book voucher to spend at our book fair! The winners were:
George- Meerkats
Sienna- Eagles
Ben- Wallabies
Pearl- Quackers
Ella- Quackers
